The Elbe Sandstone Mountains — eroded over millions of years into towers, arches, and deep canyons — feel closer to the American Southwest than to Bohemia. The UNESCO-recommended Bohemian Switzerland National Park on the Czech side and the Saxon Switzerland National Park across the German border together form one of the most distinctive natural landscapes in the region.

The drive from Prague takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. No other day trip from Prague combines nature, a UNESCO-listed rock arch, a boat ride through a gorge, an iconic German bridge, and a medieval riverside fortress in a single day.

Day Trip Itinerary: What to See and in What Order

Hřensko village — the natural starting point. A small village at the confluence of the Kamenice and Elbe rivers, wedged between sandstone cliffs. Half-timbered houses, a handful of restaurants, and the gateway to the park. Allow 20–30 minutes to walk along the river before heading up into the park.

Pravčická Gate (Pravčická brána) — the centrepiece of the Czech side. The largest natural sandstone arch in Europe at 26 metres high and 26 metres wide, with a 19th-century château built directly beneath it. The walk up from Hřensko takes 40–50 minutes through forest; the view from the top across the rock formations and into Germany is the image most people carry home from this trip. Allow 2–2.5 hours for the full circuit.

Edmund Gorge (Edmundova soutěska) — a narrow limestone gorge carved by the Kamenice river, navigated by flat-bottomed boat poled by local boatmen. The gorge walls rise 30 metres above the water on each side; the silence is complete except for the echo of the poles against rock. The ride takes approximately 30–40 minutes. Available April through October; can involve a short queue in high summer — an early arrival helps.

Königstein Fortress (Festung Königstein) — across the German border, 20 minutes by car from Hřensko. A vast medieval fortress built on a 240-metre sandstone plateau directly above the Elbe, with unbroken views across the Saxon countryside. One of the largest mountain fortresses in Europe, never taken by siege. The interior includes a deep rock-cut well, baroque buildings, and exhibitions on the fortress's history as a state prison. Bastei Bridge (Basteibrücke) — the most recognisable image of Saxon Switzerland: a stone bridge connecting sandstone rock towers 194 metres above the Elbe, built in 1851. The walk from the car park to the bridge takes 15 minutes; the view from the bridge across the river valley and toward Königstein is one of the great panoramas of Central Europe. Allow 1–1.5 hours including the surrounding viewpoints.

Czech Side vs German Side — Do You Need Both?

The honest answer: the full day with both sides is significantly better than either alone.

The Czech side (Pravčická Gate, Edmund Gorge) is more intimate — forest trails, a river gorge, a natural arch that earns its UNESCO status. The German side (Königstein, Bastei) is more dramatic in scale — the fortress plateau, the panoramic bridge, the views across the Elbe valley.

If you have to choose: a morning at Pravčická Gate followed by Bastei Bridge in the afternoon covers the two most visually iconic moments. Königstein adds depth for guests interested in history and military architecture.

For a group with varied interests — some walkers, some history lovers — the full itinerary works well. It's a long day (10 hours door-to-door) but well-paced with a private guide who can adjust the stops to the group.

Practical Information

Best time to visit: May, June, September, and October. Spring and autumn offer the best light, manageable crowds, and the Edmund Gorge boats operating normally. July and August are busiest — the gorge boats can have 45-minute queues at midday. A 8:00 AM departure from Prague solves most of the crowd problem.

Hiking fitness required: moderate. The walk to Pravčická Gate is 4–5 km round trip with a steady ascent. Good walking shoes are recommended. The gorge, Königstein, and Bastei are all accessible without significant hiking.

Getting to the Edmund Gorge: you cannot drive directly to the gorge entrance — the road ends in Hřensko village. From the car park in Hřensko, follow the flat, paved path along the Kamenice river to the boat boarding point. The walk is approximately 1.5 km and takes 20–25 minutes with no elevation gain — suitable for all fitness levels, including older guests. Inside the gorge it stays cool and slightly damp even in summer, so a light layer is useful. Allow around 1.5 hours in total for the walk and the boat ride combined.

Border crossing: no formalities. The Czech-German border in this area is open; no passport check, no delays. You simply drive across.

Boat season: Edmund Gorge boats operate April through October. Outside this period, the gorge path is walkable on foot.
