Nuremberg Christmas Market — Day Trip from Prague

One of Europe's finest Christmas markets, 3.5 hours from Prague. The Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt opens 27 November 2026 in the medieval Hauptmarkt square — 180 stalls, Nuremberg bratwurst, Lebkuchen, and a setting that no other Christmas market quite matches.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE

The Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt is held in the Hauptmarkt — the medieval main square at the heart of the old town, surrounded by the iconic red-and-white striped stalls and overlooked by the Gothic Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche). Around 180 stalls fill the square from 27 November to 24 December 2026, selling handmade decorations, wooden toys, traditional crafts and food.

The market is one of the oldest in Europe and one of the few where stall operators are approved by the city — which keeps the quality high. You will find things here that are not sold anywhere else: Nuremberg bratwurst (small, thin sausages grilled over beechwood, protected by EU geographical indication), Lebkuchen (Nuremberg spiced gingerbread, sold in decorative tins), and Zwetschgenmännle — figures made from dried prunes and wire, a craft entirely specific to this city.

NUREMBERG OLD TOWN

Beyond the market, Nuremberg's medieval Altstadt is worth several hours of your time. Nuremberg Castle (Kaiserburg) rises above the old town on a sandstone ridge — the former residence of Holy Roman Emperors, with panoramic views across the rooftops. St Lorenz Church contains the Englischer Gruß, a carved lime-wood Annunciation by Veit Stoss, suspended from the vault. Albrecht Dürer's house — the birthplace of Germany's greatest Renaissance artist — is preserved as a museum near the castle.
