Three countries. Three legendary Christmas markets. One private car with a driver-guide. Prague's glowing Old Town, Munich's Marienplatz Christkindlmarkt, Vienna's Rathausplatz — Central Europe at its most magical.
December in Central Europe is something you plan once and then spend years talking about.
Prague, Munich, Vienna — three cities that each do Christmas differently, each with markets that have been running for centuries. This 7-day private tour connects all three at the pace that lets you actually enjoy them. No group buses, no rushing. Your own car, your own guide, your own schedule.
THE MARKETS:
✦ Prague — Old Town Square Christmas Market
One of the most photogenic markets in Europe. A towering decorated tree, the Gothic Týn Cathedral as backdrop, and stalls full of svařák (Czech mulled wine), trdelník, and grilled klobása. Go at dusk when the square starts to glow. The Wenceslas Square market is ten minutes away and worth combining in one evening.
✦ Munich — Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz
Running since 1642 and still the centrepiece of Munich's Advent season. The stalls surround the Marienplatz, the Glockenspiel chimes overhead, and the smell of Glühwein and Stollen follows you everywhere. The Tollwood Winter Festival on Theresienwiese runs alongside it with a more artisan, international atmosphere.
✦ Vienna — Wiener Christkindlmarkt & Schönbrunn Palace Market
Vienna does not have one Christmas market — it has around 20. The main one at Rathausplatz, in front of the illuminated City Hall, is enormous and theatrical. The market at Schönbrunn Palace is more elegant and slightly calmer. The Spittelberg market, in a quiet neighbourhood, is the most local and least touristy.
