VIENNA is an imperial city that takes itself seriously — and earns every bit of it. The Hofburg, the Belvedere, the Ringstrasse lined with palaces and museums. SALZBURG is smaller, and more personal. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, squeezed between two rivers and watched over by a fortress that has stood for nine centuries. Mozart was born on Getreidegasse. The Sound of Music was filmed in these hills. The markets, the churches, the Baroque fountains — this is a city built to be beautiful, and it succeeded completely.
HALLSTATT is something else entirely. A village of 800 people on the edge of a mountain lake, with houses climbing the cliff behind it. It has been inhabited for 7,000 years. Salt mining here predates the Roman Empire. And on a clear morning, before the day-trippers arrive, it is one of the most beautiful places in Europe.
FOUR DAYS:
✦ Day 1 — Prague → Vienna
Depart Prague in the morning. Arrive Vienna by early afternoon. Check in to your hotel. Private walking tour of the First District: the Hofburg Imperial Palace, St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Opera House, the Graben. Evening free to explore — dinner in a Viennese Beisl, a concert if you wish.
✦ Day 2 — Vienna → Salzburg
Morning departure for Salzburg (approx. 3 hours). Arrive late morning. Private walking tour of the Altstadt: Mirabell Palace and its gardens, Getreidegasse, Mozart's birthplace, the Residenz, the Cathedral, and the market. Climb up to Hohensalzburg Fortress for panoramic views across the city and the Alps. Overnight in Salzburg.
✦ Day 3 — Hallstatt & back to Salzburg
Early morning departure for Hallstatt (approx. 1.5 hours). Arrive before the tourist crowds. Walk the lakefront, explore the old village, visit the bone chapel in the churchyard, take in the views across the Hallstätter See. Return to Salzburg by midday. Afternoon and evening free — wander the markets, find a café, rest.
✦ Day 4 — Salzburg → Prague
Morning departure. Scenic drive back through southern Bohemia (approx. 4.5 hours). Arrive Prague by early afternoon.
