Best Christmas Markets from Prague — Dresden, Nuremberg, Munich & Prague Itself

Best Christmas Markets from Prague — Dresden, Nuremberg, Munich & Prague Itself

Prague sits in the centre of Central Europe's finest Christmas market belt. Within a four-hour drive in any direction, you can reach four of the most celebrated Advent markets in Europe: the Striezelmarkt in Dresden, the Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg, the markets in Munich, and the market on Old Town Square in Prague itself. Each is worth visiting. Each is different enough that seeing one does not substitute for the others.

This is a practical guide to all four — what makes each one worth the journey, how long the drive takes, and how to combine them into a December itinerary that works.

Christmas markets from Prague — Dresden, Nuremberg, Munich guide

Prague Christmas Market — Where You Start

The main Prague Christmas market occupies Old Town Square from late November through December 26. A second, smaller market runs on Wenceslas Square simultaneously. Both are worth spending an evening at, and both are free to enter.

The Old Town Square market is genuinely beautiful — the Gothic towers of the Týn Church behind the wooden stalls, the central Christmas tree, the smell of trdelník and svařák (mulled wine) drifting across the cobblestones. It is crowded, especially on weekends, but it has a particular quality that comes from being set inside a medieval square that has looked roughly this way for six hundred years.

What to buy: Czech handicrafts, wooden toys, glass ornaments, smoked meats and cheese, honey wine, roasted chestnuts. Prices are tourist-level but not unreasonable by Western European standards.

Dresden Christmas Market — The Oldest in Germany

Dresden is 150 km from Prague — about 1 hour 45 minutes by car. It is the most natural first day trip from Prague for Christmas markets, and the Striezelmarkt is reason enough to make the journey.

The Striezelmarkt has been running since 1434, which makes it one of the oldest Christmas markets in the world. It takes place on Altmarkt Square in the heart of the Old Town — a large rectangular market square surrounded by Baroque facades, with a decorated pyramid (Weihnachtspyramide) in the centre that reaches 14 metres. Around it: more than 240 stalls selling Dresdner Stollen (the region's famous Christmas fruit bread), carved wooden figures from the Erzgebirge mountains, Meissen porcelain ornaments, and the full range of Saxon Christmas traditions.

Dresden has several Christmas markets running simultaneously. Beyond the Striezelmarkt, the Medieval Market at Stallhof (in the courtyard of the Royal Palace) recreates a Renaissance-era market with costumed sellers and period food. The Neustadt market across the river is smaller and more local in character. Between them, you can easily fill a full day.

Nuremberg Christmas Market — Germany's Most Famous

Nuremberg is 290 km from Prague — about 2 hours 45 minutes by car on a clear day. The Christkindlesmarkt is arguably the most famous Christmas market in the world: 2 million visitors a year, running since the 1600s, covering the entire Hauptmarkt square in the shadow of the Gothic Frauenkirche.

What makes Nuremberg distinctive is its strict rules: only traditional goods are permitted. No fast food, no cheap imports, no rides. What you get instead is two hundred wooden stalls selling Nuremberg Lebkuchen (the city's famous gingerbread, protected by geographical designation), roasted almonds, handmade Christmas ornaments, prune men (Zwetschgenmännle), and the spiced mulled wine served in a distinctive red mug you keep.

The Christkind — a young woman in white and gold who opens the market each year from the gallery of the Frauenkirche — is a Nuremberg tradition unlike anything at other markets. The opening ceremony draws thousands of people to the square and marks the official start of the Advent season in the city.

The Nuremberg old town is worth exploring beyond the market: the Imperial Castle above the city, the medieval walls, the Albrecht Dürer House. A full day is enough for market and city together.

Munich Christmas Markets — The Largest Selection

Munich is 380 km from Prague — about 3 hours 30 minutes by car. It is the furthest of the four destinations in this guide, and also the one with the greatest variety: Munich runs over twenty Christmas markets simultaneously in December, spread across the city's different squares and neighbourhoods.

The main market on Marienplatz below the Neues Rathaus is the most visited, with the famous Glockenspiel chiming above the stalls and the Frauenkirche towers on the horizon. But the medieval market on Wittelsbacherplatz, the Schwabing market, and the market at the Chinese Tower in the English Garden each have their own character — and the English Garden market, with its outdoor beer garden open in the cold, is genuinely unlike anything in Central Europe.

Munich's markets are also the most international in atmosphere: more languages, more visitors from further away, more variety in food and goods. For visitors who have already seen Prague and Dresden, Munich offers something noticeably different in scale and diversity.

Comparing the Four Markets

Market Distance from Prague Drive time Best for
Prague — — Medieval atmosphere, base for day trips
Dresden 150 km 1h 45min Oldest market, Baroque city, Saxon traditions
Nuremberg 290 km 2h 45min World-famous Christkindlesmarkt, traditional only
Munich 380 km 3h 30min 20+ markets, biggest variety, international atmosphere

How to Combine the Markets

If you are based in Prague for a week in December, a practical combination might look like this:

  • Day 1–2: Prague markets (Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square in the evenings, city sightseeing during the day)
  • Day 3: Dresden day trip — 1h 45min each way, full day at the Striezelmarkt and medieval market
  • Day 4: Nuremberg day trip — 2h 45min each way, full day in the city and at the Christkindlesmarkt
  • Day 5: Munich — best as an overnight, or a long day trip with an early start

Dresden and Nuremberg work easily as single day trips from Prague. Munich is on the edge of what is comfortable in one day — a group that wants to spend proper time at the markets and explore the city a little is better served by an overnight stay.

All four can be combined into a single itinerary. We plan the route, arrange transport and guide, and handle the details — contact us to put together a programme around your dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best Christmas market near Prague?

They are best for different things. Dresden's Striezelmarkt is the most atmospheric and the oldest. Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt is the most famous and the most traditional. Munich has the greatest variety. Prague's own Old Town Square market is the most convenient and one of the most beautiful settings of the four. If you can only choose one day trip, Dresden is the easiest and most rewarding for the time involved.

Can you do Nuremberg as a day trip from Prague?

Yes — 290 km, about 2 hours 45 minutes each way by private car. With an early start from Prague (8:00–8:30am), you arrive at the market by 11:00 and have five to six hours before the return drive. It is a full day but a manageable one. A private car is considerably more comfortable than the train for this journey.

How far is Dresden from Prague by car?

Approximately 150 km, about 1 hour 45 minutes on the motorway. It is the closest of the German Christmas market cities to Prague and the most natural day trip destination in December.

Is Munich too far for a day trip from Prague?

It is on the limit — 380 km, around 3.5 hours each way. An early start makes it possible for a day trip, but you arrive after midday and leave by early evening, which gives you three to four hours at the markets. For a longer visit to Munich's many different markets, an overnight stay is a better choice.

When do the Christmas markets open?

All four markets typically open in late November (usually the last Friday or Saturday before the first Sunday of Advent) and run until December 24. Prague's Old Town Square market stays open until December 26. Exact dates vary by year — check each market's official site closer to the season.

Do I need to book a tour in advance?

For private tours from Prague, we recommend booking at least two to three weeks ahead in December — availability fills up quickly, especially for weekends. Contact us with your preferred dates and we will confirm availability and send a quote.
